Stable to Stirrup

The Standardbred Stable to Stirrup Charitable Trust supports the retraining and rehoming of retired standardbreds from harness racing.

The Trust is a registered charity with the Charities Commission of NZ and is working with Harness Racing New Zealand to support the transition of these horses to their life after racing.

Stable to Stirrup provides an ethical rehoming option for Standardbreds as they retire from their career and gives them the opportunity to have a ridden life after racing.

Every horse is assessed and entered into a tailored programme where they are retrained as a riding horse to be rehomed.

Currently based in North Canterbury, the horses stay onsite at our facility where they are ridden every day in a variety of locations to broaden their experience.

We have several riders that work with the horses, so they get a good variety of ability, weight and style. When they are ready to be sold, they are assessed and then listed for rehoming.

Every horse is different, and some take longer to transition than others.

We only list the horse when it's ready.  Prospective purchasers are required to complete a vetting process, and where possible visit us and ride the horse prior to purchase.

The HRNZ Infohorse records are updated upon purchase which allows us to maintain traceability.

Over the last 5 years the Trust has worked with almost 200 horses and has rehomed throughout New Zealand.
