Gateway Programme & Pathways

There are many ways to get started in the harness racing industry — from fun, hands-on experiences in primary school right through to NZQA-recognised qualifications designed specifically for harness racing. No matter your age, background, or skill level, there’s a clear pathway to suit your interests and goals.

Kidz Kartz

Kidz Kartz is an exciting entry point into harness racing for children aged 8–16 years. It offers young participants the opportunity to learn essential horsemanship and harness driving skills in a fun, safe, and supportive environment.

Alongside practical pony care and handling, participants learn about race-day preparation, track safety, racing rules, and responsible horse ownership.

Once confident, drivers can put their skills to the test by competing in official Kidz Kartz races held at some of New Zealand's leading racecourses, often in front of large crowds on major race days. Participants can also qualify for prestigious events such as the New Zealand Kidz Kartz Cup and the Australasian Inter Dominion Series.

Kidz Kartz helps young people develop confidence, responsibility, teamwork, and a lifelong passion for horses and harness racing.

Many of today's junior and professional drivers began their journey in Kidz Kartz.

Gateway Programme

The Gateway Programme is a fantastic opportunity for secondary school students interested in pursuing a career in the equine industry.

Gateway combines practical workplace experience with NZQA unit standards, allowing students to gain industry-recognised skills while still at school. Students are placed with approved equine workplaces where they can develop their knowledge of horse care, stable management, and day-to-day industry operations.

Many of New Zealand's leading junior drivers and industry participants started their careers through Gateway, using the programme as a stepping stone into stable employment, junior driving opportunities, and further training.

Gateway is an excellent way to gain valuable experience, build industry connections, and explore career opportunities within harness racing.
