Gateway Programme & Pathways

There are many ways to get started in the harness racing industry — from fun, hands-on experiences in primary school right through to NZQA-recognised qualifications designed specifically for harness racing. No matter your age, background, or skill level, there’s a clear pathway to suit your interests and goals.

Kidz Kartz – Kidz Kartz is an exciting entry point into harness racing for kids aged 8 to 16. It offers young participants the chance to learn essential horsemanship and harness driving skills in a fun, safe, and structured environment. Alongside practical pony care and handling, kids are taught the rules of racing, track safety, and how to prepare themselves and their ponies for competition.

Gateway Programme – Gateway is a fantastic opportunity for secondary school students interested in an equine career. It combines hands-on work experience in an equine workplace with relevant NZQA unit standards, giving students a real-world introduction to the industry. Many of New Zealand’s leading Junior Drivers began their journey through the Gateway programme, using it as a stepping stone into stable roles, driving careers, and further training. It’s the perfect way to gain valuable skills, build industry connections, and kick-start a future in harness racing — all while still at school.

Once confident, participants get to put their skills to the test by racing in official Kidz Kartz events held at some of New Zealand’s top racecourses — often in front of large crowds on big race days. It’s a fantastic way to build confidence, responsibility, and teamwork, all while having a great time. Kidz Kartz drivers can even qualify to compete in prestigious events like their own NZ Kidz Kartz Cup and the Australasian Interdominion Series, giving them a true taste of what professional harness racing is all about.

Many of today’s junior and professional drivers started their journey right here — driving a pony, learning the ropes, and falling in love with the sport.
