The Trials ‘Report Card’

What was worth noting from all over the country for the week ending 31/10/2024

The Bruiser (2g Majestic Son – Mass Invasion) Tr. C Barron

Invercargill (24/10/240 In a three horse heat, the full brother to Bring On The Muscle broke soon after the start and spent the first lap chasing pacemaker A Quiet Girl (not qualified), took an inside path at the 600m to lead then cleared out over final stages. 3:04.0, MR: 2:14.6, last 400m in 31.1.
Only had the one run at the races in early October where his manners let him down but no doubting his ability if he can only hold things together.

Macandrew Markup (3g Net Ten Eom – Young Tegan) Tr. J Douglas

Got to trail in three horse heat, took off at the 500m to charge to the front, cleared out in straight to win untouched officially by 22L MR:2:00.5, 800m in 58.4, 400m in 28.2. First sign of race day form at his last start (9 starts to date) when third in September but little to inspire before that. Maybe the ‘switch’ has been turned on because the sectional times here suggested he wouldn’t be a maiden for much longer

Glengarry Moonlight (6g Auckland Reactor – Glengarry Lass) Tr. J Douglas

Galloped in score up then after settling back, was used up to lead after 600m, held together last 200m when under attack to score nicely, last 800m in 58.0, 400m in 27.3. Previously with the Telfers, last raced late August when fifth at Addington behind Betterthancash, has won the four from 31 starts and while no ‘rockstar’ should be competitive for his new stable in the deep south.

Son Of The Cleaner (6g Love You – Habibti Sadie) Tr. A Stratford

Wyndham (26/10/24) Settled fourth of 6 as not rushed early, improved sharply 1000m to dispute pace, left clear when the pacemaker off-stride 800m, said goodbye at that point and was very lonesome at the finish. MR:2:13.6, 800m in 60.6, 400m in 29.8. Has won just the two races (from 28 starts) but might still yet remember his breeding credentials and be able to add to his racetrack record. Rates as a half to recent winners Magic Dash and Tactical Bid and dam is a half to six very good winners

Major Burns (3c Art Major – Grace Burns) Tr. K Green

Straight to the front over two rivals, able to dictate terms throughout, kept going strongly to score nicely MR:2:08.4, 800m in 58.5, 400m in 28.6.
As yet unqualified but the second foal from a mare that won five and has plenty of family members further back that have ‘done the business’ on the track, one to paste away

Racie Dale (5g Racing Hill – Gracie Dale) Tr. M Shirley

Showed early speed to lead, still there final turn, kept going stubbornly when rivals threatened to run past last 150m, just did enough to get the win.
Last 800m in 57.9, 400m in 27.8. Thereabouts in previous eight starts, (last raced June 29) without setting the world on fire, no spring chicken but this effort suggested a bold run in maiden company a distinct possibility

By Chance (2g Lord Forbes – Livy Franco) Tr. G Forbes

Not rushed early and settled fifth of 5 in Indian file, improved bell to get closer and able to get onto the back of the pacemaker but didn’t stay there long as he improved again to lead 800m only to be left parked, not extended final 150m to get himself first across the line, win had touch of arrogance about it. Last 800m in 57.2, 400m in 28.4. Thrown in the deep end earlier in the year (3 starts) against the likes of Marketplace and Rubira and not disgraced, the motor definitely looks there and in the right southern company looks like a definite winning prospect, another great advert for his sire!

Birdy (3f Royal Aspirations – Mum Beat Lyall) Tr. L McKay

Rangiora (29/10/24) Away safely in this qualifier to trail three deep (field of 7), worked into second with 800m to run then left clearly in front when the pacemaker off stride at the 600m, kept going strongly under her own steam to win with plenty of gaps to her rivals, 8 secs under the required qualifying time. MR:2:10.7, 800m in 62.3, 400m in 31.8. Just for the record, dam won five and it was her dam Sunny Action (13 wins + $180k) that upset Lyell Creek many moons ago. Birdy is the third live foal from the mare with Sigrid already a winner and showing good promise. Majestic Monkey chased the winner from the 500m, seemed to get lost on the final turn but recovered strongly last 150m to be 2 1/4L away at the line.

Nothing But You (2f Captaintreacherous – Bubbled Up) Tr. S Reid

Trailed third of 6 in Indian file, improved 1000m to lead, not pushed to hold out early pacemaker Kairaki Delight who tried hard along passing lane. Last 800m in 57.5, 400m in 28.6. Former northern trainer now domiciled in North Canterbury quickly into action with a well bred filly who qualified right back in March but as yet unraced. This filly looks well worth waiting for when race day comes around.

Melody Banner (3f Captaintreacherous – Caitlin Banner) Tr.S & A Telfer

Starting from the unruly behind the mobile so settled eighth of 8 and some 15L off the pace at the bell, improved in open from the 800m and swept up to lead on straightening, too good for pacemaker The Falcon (8 wins) in impressive fashion. MR:2:00.1, 800m in 56.6, 400m in 27.8. Has struggled to regain her early 2yo form this time in with news also filtering through that a stable virus went through the Telfer team resulting in a number of their team underperforming. This effort suggested she might be ready to turn things around. Stablemate Built For Glory caught the eye running on belatedly last 100m for fourth.

Audacity (5g Sir Lincoln – La Moocha) Tr. S Harding

Stepped nicely but still seventh of 8 once the field order sorted, got to enjoy 1x1 cover last 700m, challenged in straight and too strong over the final stages, looked to have more in the tank. Last 800m in 57.5, 400m in 27.7. Only had the 10 starts and won three of them, the last start being back in April against the likes of Mo’unga and Tact McLeod who are now racing in the best of classes. Coming to hand nicely in a new prep and deserves respect wherever he chooses to go.

Ready Set Jet (4g Quaker Jet – Lochabella) Tr. R Butt

Settled third of 4, asked to improve 500m, shot away in straight for a big win, officially 7L at the line Last 800m in 59.9, 400m in 28.1. Still has a few tricks (after only 6 starts) but at the same time has shown enough to suggest there is more in store. Backmarker I Dream Of Jeannie quickly made up her handicap and tracked winner throughout, lost the plot final turn when about to launch and lost her chance.

Got You Covered (6g Art Major – Cartier) Tr. B & T White

Trailed Laver for good way, used passing lane to finish best but all five runners close up. Stable had three of the 5 runners (American Me 4th from 20m) & Commander Ben (5th). Last 800m in 56.7, 400m in 28.5. Not likely to make the NZ Cup field at this stage but as honest as the day is long (12 wins + $223k) and his astute trainers sure to place him where he can shine the brightest. Great stand start manners. Ohoka Connor not surprisingly made a mess of the standing start losing considerable ground at the start, recovered & improved strongly from 600m, far from disgraced in finishing on for second.

Elusive Dreams (2f Bettor’s Delight – Ideal Reality) Tr. R Butt

In front after 200m, always going well and impressed by staying clear of rivals, the best of whom was Captain Joan (2f Captain Crunch). Not yet qualified and this only a ‘learners’ pace but last 800m in 58.6, 400m in 29.3. Dam is a half to top horses in Ultimate Sniper and Machete so this filly has plenty going for her when (not if) she gets to the races.
