New Legislation Secures Harness Racing’s Future
Harness Racing New Zealand (HRNZ) has welcomed the passing of the Racing Industry Amendment Bill in Parliament today, describing it as a decisive step toward a more secure and sustainable future for New Zealand racing.
The legislation ensures that TAB NZ will remain the sole legal provider of online racing and sports betting in Aotearoa — helping to retain millions of dollars in local wagering revenue, protect jobs across the regions, and support the industry’s long-term growth.
“This legislation delivers certainty for the thousands of people whose livelihoods depend on harness racing,” says HRNZ Chief Executive Brad Steele. “It protects vital funding, supports jobs in the regions, and enables the industry to keep building on recent growth.”
HRNZ also acknowledges the inclusion of stronger regulatory safeguards and ministerial oversight to promote integrity, consumer protection, and a safe betting environment.
“We thank the Government and Racing Minister Winston Peters for taking action to protect the industry’s funding base and for recognising the critical role racing plays in our communities,” said Steele.
