Industry Contribution Award for Michael Douglas

Michael Douglas was recognised this week at the NZ Racecourse Managers’ Annual Conference in Palmerston North as the recipient of the Industry Contribution Award, celebrating a lifetime of service to the New Zealand racing industry and 25 years of involvement with the New Zealand Racecourse Managers Association.

Known for his loyalty, reliability, and hands-on approach, Michael has earned a reputation as someone who simply gets things done — whether it’s fixing pumps, sorting gear, or stepping in without fuss, often at all hours. His dedication and problem-solving nature have made him an invaluable part of the team wherever he has worked.

Michael’s journey in racing began as a hurdle jockey, where he enjoyed success aboard standout jumper Count Fox, who won six steeplechases and two hurdle races. He also worked part-time at the Cambridge Jockey Club during his riding career, before taking on the role of Racecourse Manager at Rotorua. During this time, he also completed his Level 3 qualification in sports turf management.

In 2016, he returned to Cambridge as Track Manager at Cambridge Raceway, quickly making an impact with his no-nonsense work ethic and practical leadership. In 2019, he moved into the role of Operations Manager, where he continues to oversee nominations, compile fields, and support the smooth day-to-day running of the venue.

Outside of racing, Michael is a devoted family man who enjoys hunting, duck shooting, and supporting the Chiefs rugby team. He’s also quietly competitive — completing the Coast to Coast cycle leg with a three-person team while managing a hernia, only revealing the detail afterwards.

Congratulations to Michael Douglas — a respected and humble contributor whose efforts continue to shape and support the success of New Zealand racing.
