Meet The Team - HRNZ Staff Profiles

ANDREW MORRIS

Title: Handicapper

Role/Duties: Co-ordinate race meetings and races within those meetings. Ensure the rules are adhered to in the running of meetings and races. Also, many of the aspects surrounding the running of meetings, races, and trials, including scheduling, dates, programming. Oversee the day-to-day activities of the North Island Handicapper. Provide support to the senior management team at HRNZ.

How long have you worked at HRNZ? 25 years. Started as Office Junior, moved into promotions, then marketing and communications before managing the department. Made the jump to Handicapping in 2013.

Are you involved in racing outside of work? If so how? Have the odd share in a galloper and enjoy wagering on Australian thoroughbred racing.

What are your hobbies? Cricket, wagering.

Favourite horse from past or present? Brownie Points – A horse the family owned that won seven races. Being a part of the day-to-day training and care for the horse enhanced the enjoyment.

What was your first paying job? Working in the Lincoln Fish & Chip Shop. Started cutting spuds when I was 13, before serving until starting at HRNZ.

Favourite holiday destination? Fiji. For me it’s a great blend of relaxation,  fun and having enough to do to not be bored. It’s pretty close too.

What do you like most about your job? There is a degree of flexibility within the working week which allows me to do such things as coach my son’s cricket team and be there for my children, when required.

What is something that not many people know about you? I have taken two senior cricket hat-tricks.
