Manawatu Harness Racing Club Sponsors Night – Wednesday 9 October

Manawatu is having its club and sponsors Cocktail function tonight on the 9th.

Local lad Luke Kemeys from Boys Get Paid is our guest speaker.

We are looking forward to our first races meeting on 29 & 31st October.

Despite a general tightening of purse strings we are maintaining stakes at the same level as last season.

Owners, trainers and drivers alike will be interested in an accommodation package we have negotiated with “The Cob Restaurant and Bar” who are new sponsors of the Manawatu Cup and have also sponsored the mobile gate this year.

One event of note is Manawatu will race on Friday 31st January with Kapiti racing at Otaki on the Sunday 2nd January. While this will mean a transition between race surfaces both Kapiti and Manawatu will are looking to the support of trainers and owners to make this work.

Methven Trotting Club - Sunday 13 October

The Methven Trotting Club will have its second meeting of the year and first on grass on Sunday 13 October and after weather caused a change of venue for our first meeting it is nice to see a settled weather forecast for race weekend this time. The Mount Harding track is in top shape as a result of an off  season surface upgrade and the efforts of track manager Carl Markham and trackman ‘Stalky’ McLeod.

The highlights of the day will be the $30,000 Alabar Methven Cup and the $13,000 What The Hill Trotbred Combo Fillies and Mares Handicap sponsored by Woodlands. Remember we couldn’t provide meaningful stakes without these studs and with the downturn in breeding these are challenging times so support our sponsors when appropriate. The Methven Cup is a key lead up to the New Zealand Cup a gruelling staying test run over 3000m on the grass and the winners list is a who’s who of harness racing. The mares trot is also a great spectacle with up to 20 trotting mares duelling over 2,400 metres.

Another tightly contested event is the The Brown Pub Punter Of The Year contest for $4,000 (entry fee $800 on the day see Penny, Secretary Methven Trotting Club). The contest runs over the last 8 races (minimum bet $100 per race. Teams up to 4 including a food and beverage voucher).

One of the longest running and successful events of its kind there is sure to be another big turnout Sunday. Loads of giveaways betting vouchers etc. so see you Sunday at Methven where the sun always shines!

Mike Heenan for Methven Trotting Club.
