Will it be hit or miss for Bullet at Timaru today?

John Versteeg is taking "the most difficult horse I've ever trained" to the grass at Timaru today.
Versteeg co-bred, races, trains and drives Bullet, a Superfast Stuart six-year-old who will line up in Race 2, the Night 'N Day Timaru Trot (1.42pm) .
"He's got a big motor - he's just lacking a bit in the brain department," says Versteeg.
The gelding hasn't lived up to his name when it comes to pinging away from the standing starts and for Versteeg, who's trained 78 winners since the mid 1980s, that has been the source of some frustration.
"He's the most difficult horse I've ever trained in my life - he just wants to pace away."
"The key will be the first 150 metres, if he steps he's a definite chance."
Bullet is at $8 in the market after placing twice in 17 starts.
He does have some form on the grass with his best run this year coming at Motukarara on February 15. He was slow away and then sat parked before showing a lot of heart in running second to Maroubra. The Ken Ford and Amanda Tomlinson-trained Marcoola four-year-old has won again since, at Reefton on March 8.
"I know he's a tricky one for the punters," says Versteeg of Bullet, "because on his day he can do it."
