The Trials Report - Six Of The Best

These six  horses have trialled pleasingly in recent weeks and this week 3/4/24 they head back to the racetrack.

Which Way (4m Father Patrick – Kurien) Tr. L Pearson

Well-bred maiden trotter with Canterbury connections who has snuck down to Invercargill for her debut on Thursday (Race 2). Only qualified in early March for Bob Butt (MR:2:14.4, 800m in 61.2) where she ran second of 4 starters and was a workout winner before that at Rangiora albeit in a slow time. Placed second of 3 (21/3/25) in an Invercargill trial for her new trainer. Not easy to win on debut but has picked a good race to kick off her race career. Dam was unraced but a half to some smart types in Enthusiast (11 wins), Call You Later (9 wins) & Inspire (9 wins and Rowe Cup).

Double Jeopardy (4h Captaintreacherous – Bettor Think Twice) Tr. S & A Telfer

Prepared for his current campaign at the North Island arm of the Stonewall operation, placing twice in two workouts at Pukekohe late January, the last on 30/1/25 where he ran fourth of 4 behind Merlin in a 2:02.4MR, last 800m in 57.0 but was only 3L from the winner and under his own steam. Resumed at Auckland behind Greased Lightning in a 1:53MR and didn’t get all favours when produced at Wyndham (30/3/25) when finishing second to Betterthancash. Highest rated horse at Invercargill this Thursday (Race 9) and despite the wide draw, should take a power of beating.

Queen Tyron (3f Bettor’s Delight – Tyron’s Falcon Ella) Tr. R & J Dunn

Resumed on a very positive note (28/3/25) when a nice third behind Shakira in a 1:57.4MR. This was her first race day start since May of 2024 so naturally she is going to come on in leaps and bounds in terms of her fitness. Prior to that run she had placed second behind Rock Or Bust at the Rangiora trials in a 1:58.9MR, last 800m in 56.3. The latter went to Wyndham last week and duly won, defeating the very promising Secret Agent Man. Cops a nice draw in Race 2 at Addington this Friday with John Dunn electing to stay in the South Island for his race day drives.

Hadron Collider (4g Sweet Lou – Pacing Delight) Tr. H & A Cullen

Second up at Addington this Friday night (Race 4) and this represents a drop back after resuming with a handy fifth behind Vessem (21/3/25). Before that, he had won a trial at Rangiora in a 2:02.9MR, 800m in 57.0 where he trailed and finished best over three rivals. Last season he mixed it with the best of his 3YO age group and didn’t disgrace himself. His four wins have had him breaking the $100k barrier in stake money won and despite drawing wide on Friday, he looks a big chance with Blair Orange to drive.

We Walk By Faith (4g Bettors Delight – Wicked Nights) Tr. H & A Cullen

Group 1 winning 3YO who didn’t have much joy in a short Australian campaign earlier in the year but returned (21/3/25) in FFA company and hit the line strongly when fifth behind Don’t Stop Dreaming. Was seen making late ground on a 1:54.5MR, last 800m in 57.1, just 4L from the winner. Goes to Cambridge (Race 8) and giving his rivals up to 25m head start but over 2700m. Has won the 7 races and near on $400k and as the highest rated horse, expecting his class to take him very close to winning. Matty White sticks with him.

Andretti (2g Bettors Delight – LA Vitesse) Tr. M & N Purdon

Well schooled in Canterbury trials before heading north then won a workout at Pukekohe (12/3/25) in a 2:03.5MR, last 800m in 59.9. On that occasion, he raced fourth of 6 on a showery day before being asked to challenge last 400m and nabbing the pacemaker last 50m. Found Fugitive too good on debut but did have a much tougher run and beat the others just as easily. Major swing in draws this Friday at Cambridge (Race 2) and looms as a real chance to reverse the tables on the likely favourite. Everybody’s quinella! Dam won 7 and is a half to One Change (20 wins + $743k). This is the family of Changeover and Chokin.
