The Trials Report - Six of the Best

These six horses have trialled pleasingly in recent weeks and this week 5/6/25 they head back to the racetrack.

Stash The Cash (7g Muscle Mass – Miss Invasion) Tr. N Chilcott

Interestingly, went to the Cambridge workouts (10/5/25) and started against the pacers in a mobile heat but after being safely away, was pulled out of the contest. Followed that up with an unlucky fourth on the same track (22/5/25) after getting held up around final bend when finishing 4L from the winner MR:2:06.9, sectionals not available. Back at Cambridge this Thursday in Race 7 and is clearly the best credentialed horse in this field. Has already been placed in half its 16 maiden starts and this is his big chance to shine.

Bettor Be A Legend (3g Sweet Lou – Bettor Be A Lady) Tr. G Rogerson

Won a workout at Pukekohe (13/5/25) then went to the Park in a fresh state (23/5/25) and after getting used up to lead, battled bravely into fifth despite getting headed turning in. Goes back to Auckland this Friday night in Race 6 and from a handy draw, should be an improved horse. Drawn to employ similar tactics. This time last year as a 2YO was running placings in behind Bar Louie in good times and isn’t he proving to be more than handy in recent racing. Full brother to top Aussie pacer Cantfindabettorman.

One Eyed Bandit (3g Always B Miki – Break Dance) Tr.B Butt

Has been awesome at the Rangiora trials in May winning on three separate occasions, the last on 28/5/25 where he settled sixth of 7 before getting to three back on the outer with 800m to run, very wide 400m, swooped down outer and breezed on by rivals. MR:2:02.4, 800m in 57.4, 400m in 28.2. Makes much anticipated debut this Friday at Addington in Race 4 against six other non winners. Drawn the widest but shouldn’t make any difference to the race outcome. Punters shouldn’t expect any fancy odds.

Captain Christian (3g Captaintreacherous – A Christian Act) Tr. S & A Telfer

Followed up impressive trial win at Rangiora (8/5/25) with an emphatic front running display on the same course (18/5/25) with driver Tim Williams indicating that he didn’t activate the removable deafeners due to having the field covered over the final stages. MR:2:00.4, 800m in 57.4, 400m in 28.3. Second up this Friday at Addington in Race 10 and the only horse drawn the second line. Expecting further improvement and looks good enough to win again. Stable certainly on fire in recent weeks.

Major Happy (5m Art Major – Shrieks Of Delight) Tr. P Vermeulen

Two runs back after running on behind The Lazarus Effect (8/5/25) in a Rangiora trial, have been devoid of luck and much better than form line suggests. Latest effort held up in behind Celestial Sea (30/5/25), finishing officially sixth in a 2:00MR. Gets another chance at Addington on Sunday in Race 8 with John Dunn to drive in a 2600m stand. No champion and not likely to win out of turn but now a rating 35 and those who stay loyal could be rewarded at generous odds.

Amendment (4m Volstead – Show Gait) Tr. B Butt

Burnt punters bigtime (25/4/25) when a hot favourite on debut by breaking on a sticky track and losing all chance after 200m. Prior to that inglorious debut had won a string of trials in impressive fashion for trainer and part-owner Regan Todd. Has since been transferred to another part owner and new trainer Bob Butt and back at the Rangiora trials (28/5/25) where she broke shortly after the standing start and lost 50m, stayed back until the 400m where she looped the field to lead on straightening and untouched to keep rivals at bay. MR:2:09.7, 800m in 63.6, 400m in 31.1. Second 2nd up at Addington this Friday, Race 2 where she has drawn the pole from behind the mobile. Hardly reliable at this stage but obviously has a motor. Dam won 6 of 12 and $113k.
