The Trials Report - Six Of The Best
These six horses have trialled pleasingly in recent weeks and this week 22/5/24 they head back to the racetrack.
The Lazarus Effect (4g Lazarus – Brook Street) Tr. B Butt
Back after an enforced layoff due to health issues. Went to the Rangiora trials (8/5/25) and maintained his unbeaten public record. On that occasion, he settled sixth of 8 in single file improving in the open last 800m, surged to the front on straightening and coasted to the line well clear of his rivals. MR:2:02.1, 800m in 56.5, 400m in 26.0. Has chosen to resume at Winton this Thursday in Race 10 where he will start a warm order. Carter Dalgety to drive. The prolonged wait should be well worth it for the large Alabar syndicate of owners.

Nymbal (2g Lazarus – Glenferrie EJ) Tr. B & G Hughes
Nymbal by name, Nimble by nature - 4 public outings for 4 wins, the last at Alex Park in the pouring rain on a slushy track (9/5/25) where he led race rival Evernden and kept up a strong run to keep that runner at bay (only a 2 horse heat). MR:2:03.2, 800m in 57.6, 400m in 27.3 Zach Butcher drove on that occasion. Goes to Cambridge this Thursday in Race 3 for his race debut where Fitzroy likely to be the favourite as the only runner with race night experience (3 starts for 3 placings). Looks very capable of giving the Purdon trained runner some stiff opposition.

Better Be A Legend (3g Sweet Lou – Better Be A Lady) Tr. G Rogerson
Has been away from the races for nearly a year but has had a couple of workouts to prepare for his resumption, the last a winning turn at the Pukekohe workouts where he led and did enough to hold out race rival Always Ask in the hands of stable driver James Stormont. MR:2:03.0, 800m in 58.5, 400m in 28.1. Gets the right kind of race to restart his race career this Friday at Auckland in Race 10 with a handy draw to help his cause. Two earlier race day starts produced two minor placings, the last in a 1:55MR. Also a full brother to Cantfindabettorman (20 wins)

Allamericanplayer (2c Bettor’s Delight – Goodlookingbabe) Tr. S & A Telfer
Really caught the eye coming from well back to push the very smart Fugitive last start at Auckland then went to the workouts at Pukekohe (13/5/25) against older horses. Used up to lead then headed with 400m to run, not knocked about to hold third behind an impressive Onyx Shard MR:2:03.9, 800m in 58.1, 28.4. Comes back south this Friday to Addington (Race 6) to renew rivalry with the Dalgety runner and has drawn the ace in the time-honoured Welcome Stakes for 2YOs. Every chance to trail the likely favourite and to get his chance to reverse the order of placings. Hasn’t missed a top 3 placing in 5 career starts to date .

Cheer The Captain (3g Captaintreacherous – Cheer The Lady) Tr. S & A Telfer
Very nice trial at Rangiora (8/5/25) where he ran on behind the very smart The Lazarus Effect for second, last 800m in 56.5, 400m in 26.0. Only had the two race day starts including a winning debut at Cambridge. Unplaced last start at Auckland 31/12/24 behind Greased Lightning who has now won 5 races. He has plenty of breeding behind him and likely to be an improved horse this time in. Resumes at Timaru this Sunday in Race 1 and cops a handy draw. Big stable kicking a lot of goals currently.
Bar Louie (3g Sweet Lou – Haughty Helen) Tr. S & A Telfer
Went to the Rangiora trials (8/5/25) and gave his rivals a 20m head start and a beating. MR:2:05.5, 800m in 56.5, 400m in 28.3. Eight career starts all in the North Island and began that career with a hiss and a roar winning three very quickly but disappointed when taking on the likes of Marketplace in the better 3YO events. Goes to Timaru on Sunday (race 8) for their winter cup which is a stand but did begin well in the Rangiora trial. Up against some seasoned performers but the best version of Bar Louie would give them something to think about.
