The Trials Report : Six Of The Best

These six horses have trialled pleasingly in recent weeks and this week 24/4/24 they head back to the racetrack.

Seaclusion (5m Sweet Lou – Classy Beach) Tr. G Rogerson

Four wins and 15 placings (28 starts) and $114k mare resuming, last raced December 20, 2024. Been back at the Pukekohe workouts where she ran second behind Jeremiah (16/4/25), led on that occasion only to be nabbed by the trailing horse, last 800m in 57.6, 400m in 27.1. Ohoka Connor back in third. Before that on the 10/4/25, she led again and sprinted up strongly in 55.4/26.5 to outstay Stella Rouge and Marketplace back in third. Goes back to Auckland this Friday night (Race 1) to kick off a fresh campaign, drawn the second line but that could still work out for her. Her fresh record is very good.

Mick Konstantin (4g Downbytheseaside – Hunua Belle) Tr. J Abernethy

Big strong boy who has needed time but did qualify back in 2024 and has had plenty of practice at northern workouts since. Has won his last two workouts from in front at Pukekohe (April 10 and 19) running a 2:01.3MR, last 800m in 57.4, 400m in 27.1. Makes his debut at Auckland (Race 10) in the rescheduled race from last week where Tytate is going to be the likely favourite but he has shown enough to suggest he can win a race at short notice. Has some solid breeding to support his claim as a racehorse with his trainer also being his part owner/breeder.

Look To Da Stars (4g Andover Hall – One Over Da Stars) Tr. M & N Purdon

Resumes at Addington this Friday (Race 3) after a quiet trial at Rangiora (10/4/25) where he ran fourth of 9 behind Mavis Jones. Sat fourth in single file on that occasion and not pushed over the final stages. MR:2:09.0, 800m in 59.0, 400m in 28.8. Hasn’t started on race day since running gallant minor placings behind the unbeaten Aussie superstar Keayang Zahara back in Nov/Dec 2024 and despite only winning two races to date (17 starts), has already amassed $112k in stakes. Has picked a good race to resume in (Addington Race 3) and his class should take him very close,

Warrior Chief (5g Sweet Lou – Here We Go Again) Tr. J Gameson

Third up this Friday night at Addington (Race 7) and while having another tricky draw to contend with, should be getting very close to his best. Last start ran on late for fourth behind the impressive Sideshow Bruce who ran his last 800m in 55.1. Prior to resuming had won a trial at Ashburton (5/4/25) where he raced fifth of 5 before powering over the top of his rivals final stages. MR:2:01.8, 800m in 57.0, 400m in 27.2. Apart from a winning trial back in August 2024, the Chief hadn’t been seen at the races since last May so not surprisingly, he has taken some time to find his form. He has won the 5 from just 19 starts to date, his dam won 11 and his 2nd dam Kym’s Girl (18 wins) won a NZ Cup.

Captain’s Mistress (3f Captaintreacherous – Imaginary Bet) Tr. N Williamson

Far from disgraced when a resuming second at Addington behind General Jen and a workout winner before that at Winton (4/4/25) where she quietly disposed of her five rivals. MR:2:06.1, 800m in 59.2, 400m in 28.8. Last season’s top-rated 2YO filly who has come back in fine fettle and goes again this Sunday at Invercargill’s Diamonds Day (Race 7). She has copped a second line draw which may work out well and interestingly her trainer has stuck with her, electing to hand over the drive on her stablemate, the unbeaten Utah Jazz (3 wins).

Slots (4g Sweet Lou – Spin To Win) Tr. S & A Telfer

Right out of luck when resuming (17/4/25) at Winton when badly held up then suffering a flat tyre in a race won by Major Torque in a 1:57.7MR. That was his first race day start since October of 2024. In between times there were strong trials performances at Rangiora (April 1 and 10) in readiness for a fresh campaign. The latter effort had him placed third behind Treacherous Baby and subsequent winner Sideshow Bruce in a 1:59.4MR, last 800m 55.9, 400m in 26.8. Second up at Invercargill this Sunday (Race 11) where he has drawn superbly at two. Driver Tim Williams might just take any bad luck out of play and dominate from the front.
