The MM double act at Alexandra Park

By Michael Guerin

This is a story about story about two little fillies who really enjoy each other’s company.

Which is just as well because Manchester’s Moment and Mad Mary do everything together, Like, literally everything.

They are both three-year-old trotting fillies by Muscle Mass, and were weaned together at Alabar, where they lived in the same paddock.

They were weaned at the same time, then spelled together and came into work at the Michelle Wallis and Bernie Hackett stable at the same time.

They worked up, same preps, then spelled together.

They eventually made to the trials, you guessed it, together and then made their race night debuts at Alexandra Park on Friday night.

And, well, you can guess what happened next, even as unlikely as it is considering very maiden trotters win or place in their first race.

The two little girls who have always done everything together ran first and second in Border Fencing Services Trot, with Manchester’s Moment beating Mad Mary by half a length.

“It is amazing they have always done everything together, right from when they were weaned,” explains Wallis.

“And fittingly there really isn’t much between them.

“When you think what they have done in their first starts they could easily end up in a good fillies trotting race together at the end of the season.”

The MM and MM quinella started another night of trotting domination at Alexandra Park for the Wallis/Hackett stable as they also captured the $35,000 TAB Metro Trot when Illicit Love held out Youneverknow, who had every right to run it down.

“He is a horse we have always liked,” says Wallis.

“He was a good horse late last season even though you wouldn’t say he was a natural two-year-old.

“He won a couple of races really well and then was luckless in a couple of the big three-year-old races.

“We know he will go on with it but he can spell now.”

So would Illicit Love, who looks certain to be one of our top 10 young trotters, chase a spot in the Ascent slot race at Addington on Show Day?

“We will have to have a talk about that but he is good enough.”

The stable has to settle for minor placings in the night’s other big trot when High Energy divedombed their three hopes but are still on target for a record season.

The night’s other TAB Metro Final for the pacers was won by Twista as Team Telfer continued an outrageous week.

Twista settled in the trail and Josh Dickie never had to move apart from into the passing lane to provide one of three wins for the night at Alexandra Park for the stable, with two more at Addington.

That has seen them shorten from $2.80 to win the national trainer’s premiership a week ago to $1.30 last night, incredibly short as they still trail Michael House but they have huge winter firepower and enormous momentum.
