Sires Stakes races confirmed for Ashburton
It’s been 13 years since Themightyquinn produced a remarkable finish to win the Sires Stakes Silver at the Ashburton Raceway.
Now it’s been confirmed the final heat for the three-year-old colts and geldings is back and will be held on Labour Day, October 26, the same day as the Ashburton Flying Stakes.
Ashburton will also host the first heat of the Dunstan Horsefeeds Sires Stakes series for the fillies over a mile on Thursday November 12 and on May 1 2021 will host the Lone Star Sires Stakes Prelude 2 for the two-year-old trotters, also over a mile.
In November 2007 Themightyquinn, then trained by Peter Bagrie and driven by Ricky May, extricated his way out of a seemingly impossible position three back on the fence and unleashed a sprint that would become his trademark. He won the race in 1:55.9, ahead of Passion N Glory and Goldie Blue.
Themightyquinn won five races as a three-year-old but went on to cement his status as one of the all-time greats with 58 wins from 111 starts, amassing more than $5.5m in the process.
