Records broken during huge Cup and Show Week
A record breaking New Zealand Cup and Show week is over.
Both Addington and Ashburton attracted massive turnovers with Cup day totalling $7.51m, the most ever money wagered through the TAB on a single race meeting in this country.
The IRT New Zealand Cup led the way with $2.15m.
Ashburton on Thursday had turnover of $1.64m, with the most popular race being the more than $236,000 wagered on the Betavet Handicap Pace, won by Love Yourself.
Show Day was another huge day, with close on $4m being wagered. The total was $3.91m with the most money going on the Airpark Canterbury NZ Pacing Free For All ($508K), followed by the Renwick Farms Dominion Trot ($437K). Last year the spend on the Dominion was $359K.
Friday also featured a big collect for the Boys Get Paid national punters club in the very last race. They wagered $12,500 win/ $27,500 place on Cyrus at $12/3.50 - their $40,000 investment returning $246,500.
It was just one of number of big wins for the syndicate.
They started with a pool of $230,000 and it grew to almost $740,000 - meaning all 5000 people involved more than tripled their money.
Their profit for the week was $508,294.50.
