NZSBA launches The Breeders app, free for the whole standardbred industry
The New Zealand Standardbred Breeders Association (NZSBA) has launched The Breeders NZ, a free app that puts breeding news, tools and alerts for the harness racing industry in one place on your phone.
The app is available now on the App Store for iPhone and iPad, and the Android version will follow on Google Play later this week. Most of its features are open to anyone involved in standardbred breeding, while NZSBA financial members unlock a further set of research tools and benefits when they sign in.
Free for everyone
The headline feature is foster alerts. When a mare loses her foal or a foal loses its mare, a stud representative posts an alert, and users in that island are notified straight away, so that a match can be found as quickly as possible. Users can choose to receive alerts for the North Island, the South Island or both.
Also free to everyone:
Health and biosecurity alerts from NZSBA when an outbreak or a rule change affects horses
- News and Breeders Weekly, with a notification when each new issue lands
- Test Mating, a six-generation pedigree for any advertised sire and your mare, built on live HRNZ data
- Leading sires tables for Australia and North America, with New Zealand's a tap away on HRNZ
- BredEX, NZSBA's marketplace for breeding stock for sale, lease or free, with no commission
- Events, covering sales, seminars, the AGM and show dates, plus every group and feature race of the season, with reminders
- My Stud, which keeps your mares, services, scans and foaling dates on your phone with reminders, alongside a foaling calculator and a breeding cost calculator, and your records stay on your phone
- Breeding Matters, the Sires Book and Standardbred Showing, ready to read
More for NZSBA members
Financial members of NZSBA unlock a further set of tools:
- Crosses of Gold, showing which sire lines cross best with which broodmare sire lines in New Zealand, Australia and North America, and it works with no signal
- Sales results from every NZB yearling sale since 2019 and every weanling sale since 2021, by year, sale and sire, with price bands, top lots and trends
- Stallion directory, listing every stallion in the 2026/27 Sires Book with his fee, stud, contact details, pedigree and advert, and members can star a stallion to be told when his fee changes or when BredEX lists one of his progeny
- Member discounts with more than 50 businesses, with the codes held in the app
- Digital membership card, ready to show at the counter or the gate
There is no password to remember. Members tap Members in the app, enter the email address their NZSBA subscription invoice is sent to, and receive a six-digit code by email, after which they can sign back in with Face ID or their fingerprint. Membership payments are matched weekly, so anyone who has only just paid should allow a few days for their benefits to unlock.
Built for the whole industry
"We wanted breeders, studs, owners and anyone with an interest in the standardbred to have the tools they use every season in their pocket, and most of it is free because foster alerts and biosecurity warnings only work if everyone has them," said NZSBA Executive Manager Brad Reid. "Our members get the deeper research tools on top of that, and we'll keep adding to the app over the season."
An update arriving shortly will add a stallion shortlist for your mares and Top Crosses within Crosses of Gold.
How to get it
Download The Breeders NZ for iPhone and iPad at apps.apple.com/nz/app/the-breeders-nz/id6815927206, or search "The Breeders NZ" in the App Store. The Android version will be on Google Play later this week.
Users should allow notifications when the app asks, so they don't miss a foster alert or a new issue of Breeders Weekly, and can choose which notifications they receive under Members > Account. Anyone who isn't yet a member can join at thebreeders.co.nz.
