Mhai Surfer Girl surprises with ease of victory at Cambridge

By Jordyn Bublitz

Mhai Surfer Girl couldn't have made a more impressive return to winning form at Cambridge Raceway last night.

Despite having to make a three wide move at the mile mark, the five-year-old mare took out the Dunstan Horsefeeds Mobile Pace by nearly seven lengths.

Trainer Matthew White says while he thought she was well-placed in the field, he didn’t expect her to dominate the way that she did.

“It looked a good race for her on paper and she slotted in there well, so we were confident, but we were quite surprised the way she won,” White said, “her preparation has been good and she’s very consistent, she doesn’t win out of turn but has never gone a bad race.”

It was win number six for the five-year-old daughter of Downbytheseaside and brings junior driver Harrison Orange up to 37 wins for the season.

With Crystal Hackett also winning last night with Mazeppa (his sixth win in his last eight starts) they are locked together for the fourth and final spot to go to the Australasian Young Drivers' Championships in Brisbane in July.

The cut-off for that is on Sunday. If they are still tied on the same number of wins then the winner will be decided on strike-rate (UDR).

White meanwhile is hopeful that the winning momentum will carry over into this evening’s meeting at Alexandra Park where he has two runners engaged.

In Race 3, the 2025 National Weanling Sale 26 June Mobile Pace, Tytate looks to break her maidens after being runner-up in her last four starts

“She had a gallop at the mile last start and it was a really good effort for her to get up and run second, just cost herself really over racing, ” said White.

“I’d like to see her relax a bit better, the way she’s racing she’s going to be competitive and she’s capable of winning a few races so hopefully she can get the monkey off of her back tonight.”

Power N Glory hits the track for Race 4, the Alex Bar & Eatery Mobile Pace with junior driver Stephanie Burley in the bike and Matthew admits the mare can be one to mix her form.

“She’s in and out of form, she raced a nice bunch of mares last start and just got found wanting the last furlong. She’s trained on good from that and slots into this race okay from barrier 2 and is a chance of running in the money.”
