Lauzelle wins again at Motukarara
By Mike Love
Methven trainer Stephen Williams has every right to feel a little bit excited about his four-year-old Majestic Son trotter Lauzelle after he produced another dashing display to win the Waihora RFC Trot at Motukarara yesterday.
The win was Lauzelle’s third from just four starts - with the only blemish coming from a tardy beginning over 2000m at Addington.
“He’s a tough horse and can hold his speed for a long way. He’s got quite a bit of ability,” said Williams.
Lauzelle, with driver Leo O’Reilly, was slow away from their unruly mark, taking time to find his feet. Once tacked on, they followed the running line, ending up one-out four back. O’Reilly then swooped down the outside to get up and win by a neck from Bevron and Mister.

Lauzelle is out of Brylin Boyz mare Brylin Page who was bred and trained by Williams, and was a winner of four races. Brylin Page was good enough to make a Jewels field in 2008 running fifth to Springbank Richard at Cambridge. Lauzelle was the fifth and final foal out of Brylin Page, and is the only winner.
“She was a good mare. She only had 26 starts, but had bad tie-up problems. So I decided just to put her in foal."
Lauzelle has tested the patience of Williams at times in training, but perseverance is certainly paying off.
“He can be a ratbag at times. I can only really work him in the cart with others around - otherwise I see a lot of his back feet. But I do think he’s had some muscle problems, so I try to keep on top of that.
“I think he’s starting to get kinder. He behaved himself at the races today.”
Where Lauzelle and Williams head to next is not certain as he climbs up the ratings. But one thing is for sure, Williams knows he has a good one.
“Once he’s had another 10 or 15 starts, he should just keep developing and be a really nice horse.
“I’ll just have a look at the programmes and see what's coming up. The longer distances should probably suit him. But I want to look after him.”
