Krug gets Group One call up

The connections of star three-year-old Krug have accepted an invite for the $250,000 Group Rising Sun in Queensland.

The race is the richest in the Southern Hemisphere for three and four-year-old pacers.

New Zealand Derby winner Krug, who’s had 13 wins in just 20 starts for trainers Cran and Chrissie Dalgety, is just one of four invites to the first ever running of the Group One feature at Albion Park on July 10.

“All the three-year-olds in Australia and New Zealand, to get down to the last couple and get a nod for an invite, it is a privilege,” Cran Dalgety said.

“Some of the four-year-olds will be strong, when you think about horses like Expensive Ego being there, he is going really good and will be at the top of the three when it comes to favouritism.”

Expensive Ego, trained by Belinda McCarthy, has won 12 from 17 and was the first to be invited and is currently a $3 favourite.

And Krug won’t be the only Kiwi gunning for Group One glory across the Tasman with Copy That rated the second favourite at $6, along with Stylish Memphis. Krug is rated at $7 along with Amazing Dream while Anthony Butt’s gun horse Boots Electric is at $11.

Another top Aussie will be Patsbeachstorm, trained by David Moran (of Lochinvar Art fame).
