Kerryn Tomlinson secures first training win
By Jonny Turner
Kerryn Tomlinson added winning trainer to her list of harness racing accomplishments at Winton on Thursday.
The Oamaru horsewoman chalked up her first training success when she drove Dare Devil to win the Rheem Mobile Pace.
Tomlinson is a newcomer to the training ranks, having taken out her licence last year and training alongside Brad Williamson, who she continues to work for.
“Since I finished as a junior driver I thought I would have a crack at training.”
“I have always owned horses and pretty much trained them myself and had them with Brad.”
“Hopefully we can keep kicking home winners in the training ranks and the driving ranks.”
Tomlinson purchased Dare Devil late last year, with the pacer mixing his form while being handed a series of tough draws.
While the five-year-old wasn’t handed the best starting spot yesterday, things finally went his way.
“I am pretty happy with this fella today, he ran a good time,” Tomlinson said.
“He just needed to get the right run, they were going hard up front and we were sitting back doing nothing.”
“He came swishing home, which was great.”
Tomlinson was back in the winner’s circle when her old favourite, the Brad Williamson trained Domination’s Call, ran to a track-record breaking win in yesterday’s feature trot.
Tearaway leader Spells Of Love set up a sizzling speed with Domination’s Call proving too strong at the end of a testing 2400m, cut out in 2.59.8.
“He has always been a favourite, right from the start.”
“Brad has been really good, he has let me drive him pretty much the whole way through his career.
“He is such an honest horse, today he just kept trying.”
“He is a lovely horse and he has got great owners - Ray and Joan Scott from Timaru.”
“They will be rapt.”
Domination’s Call completed a winning double for the Williamson stable following Tabasco’s standout victory.
The five-year-old worked very hard to find the lead before outstaying his rivals in the Mico Mobile Pace. Tabasco also scored in smart time, running 2.56.4 in his 2400m victory.
