Iremonger gets first training win

Scott Iremonger had a unique perspective on his first training success.

At yesterday's Banks Peninsula Trotting club meeting at Motukarara, Which Way, trained by Scott and his father Dave, took out the B.P.T.C. Thanks All Our Wonderful and Loyal Sponsors Trot.

It was the first win for the combo, and Scott's first win as well, not that he knew much about what was going on at the business end of the race. He was many lengths off the lead with the stablemate A Quiet Girl, who finished eighth.

"I wasn't sure from where I was but I asked the Clerk and he said 'yep she did it' - so that was pleasing," says Iremonger.

Driven by Robbie Holmes, it was Which Way's first win at start number 29.

While it was Scott's first training success to go with his 13 wins as a junior driver, Dave has had 47 wins on his own account since starting out in the early 1990s.

Their arrangement is unusual in that they train small teams 80 kilometres apart.

Scott, who's a fulltime farrier, trains at Chertsey just south of Christchurch while Dave is based at Rangiora in North Canterbury.

"We talk just about every day and we know who's doing what," says Scott, "and sometimes we will meet up at Motukarara and work the horses together."

"And I'd be out there every week shoeing his horses too."

Now that he's a winning trainer Iremonger already has another goal in mind.

"I want to train and drive a winner."

What made a rainy cold afternoon at Motukarara yesterday even more pleasing is that his first win as a trainer coincided with his partner (and aspiring trials driver) Ann Moriarty's birthday.

It was a good day all round.
