Impressive Razorsharpmiki goes two from two
By Jonny Turner
Gordon Lee admits he isn't sure exactly how good Razorsharpmiki is.
Lee and brother Colin made it a perfect two-from-two out of their Wyndham barn with the three-year-old who zipped to victory at Sunday's Forbury Park meeting at Gore.
Razorsharpmiki wasn’t overtaxed as driver Brent Barclay gave the pacer a perfect trip before he reeled off sharp closing splits to score.
While Lee knows his horse has his share of talent, exactly how he will stack up in better company is yet to be proven.
But between his own judgement and that of his driver, the trainer is reasonably hopeful the future looks bright.
"To be honest I am not sure how good he is," Lee said.
"But our driver seems to be impressed by him and that is not easy to do."
Given he's shown greenness and looked like a raw product with plenty of scope to improve, it looks certain Razorsharpmiki will thrive off the let-up the Lee brothers plan to give him next.
"He has done everything we have asked of him, so he can have three weeks off now."
"He's going out to Mark and Debbie Smith's then we will get him back in and see what he can do next."
Lee's wife Betty races the smart three-year-old with Neil Bulling, Rob Williams, Howie McArthur, and David Heath.
The group bred the pacer after Lee couldn't resist the chance to buy his dam, Razorsharp.
The mare is from a family the Lees have had plenty of success with, including the Southland Oaks winner, Royal Counsell.
"I bought the broodmare in foal to Captain Crunch for $5000."
"Peter Lagan rang me up, so I had a quick look at her and as soon as I saw her pedigree I thought I would take her."
"Captain Crunch was around $5000 at the time, so I rang him straight back and said I’d buy her.”
Justa Crunch, who has been campaigning from the Lee stable recently, was the resulting foal.
Razorsharpmiki and his half-sister are the only two horses Lee is campaigning at the moment.
The Wyndham trainer has two trotting youngsters by Volstead to come in to work.
Lee is reasonably quiet on the horse front after facing his share of health challenges in recent times.
Having a horse like Razorsharpmiki to race has brought him plenty of satisfaction.
"Any win is good because you know the work that goes into it."
Lee has sold many of his most promising horses during his 40 years as a licence-holder.
Among them are horses like Baby Bling, who went on to win the Miracle Mile.
But so far the trainer and his wife and their racing partners are resisting any offers.
