Carter's winning week heads to Winton

By Jonny Turner

After a magical Monday, Carter Dalgety just wants his form to continue at Winton on Friday.

The reinsman enjoyed a brilliant Labour Day at Ashburton when driving three smart youngsters from the Cran and Chrissie Dalgety stable to win, booking their spots in Group 1 features at the New Zealand Cup Carnival.

Dalgety has those big targets plus the Australasian Young Drivers Championship to look forward to over the next fortnight.

Winton’s 11-race card gives the junior reinsman the chance to hone his skills in the lead up and he looks a big chance of adding to his winning tally for the week.

Dalgety rates Santiago his biggest winning threat, though he found it hard to split him and Rakataycan.

“I’d say Santiago because he was going pretty well through the winter and he felt like a horse that was only going to get stronger with a bit of a break.”

“I saw the replay of his trial and he’s run on well in good time, so he looks pretty forward.”

“From the draw (2) he would have to be a great chance.”

Rakataycan was excellent in her fresh up second at Ascot Park earlier this month.

After sitting parked throughout, the filly fought on gamely.

“That was a great run and with a bit more luck this time you would think she would be right there.”

“She’s got the one draw, she came out of the gate pretty well last start so hopefully she can make use of it and give them something to chase.”

Andy Hall looks another nice hope for Dalgety, though his chances firmly rely on him bringing his manners.

“He was a bit naughty on me, then I saw he broke last start when I wasn’t down there.”

“In between he went a bottler behind Duchess Maria.”

“It looks a nice race for the old boy if he’s able to do everything right.”

Dalgety drives three trotters from the Lyndon Bond stable, with Ellagator Al and Rondo Trouble starting at Winton alongside Andy Hall.

“Ellagator Al has shown enough ability at times to be a chance, hopefully Bondy can get the best out of him down there.”

“Rondo Trouble got it wrong fresh up but it’s a suitable race if he can do things right.”

Bond and Dalgety also combine with Rack’em Up, who has been in strong form since shifting south from Canterbury.

“It is probably a similar field to what he raced last start when he ran fourth, but you’ve got Indulge Me in there who will be very hard to beat.”

“He’s been sticking on his races pretty well and I think Winton will suit him more than Invercargill.”

Rising Storm has been freshened but drops sharply in grade from his last start seventh at Winton, making him a legitimate threat for Dalgety.

Pacific Art rates the outsider of Dalgety’s drives after disappointing at Ascot Park last week.
