Cambridge's Thursday meeting called off - "not viable"
Harness Racing New Zealand is looking at ways it can make up for Thursday's abandoned meeting at Cambridge.
Just 28 horses remained after extended nominations, prompting HRNZ to make the call and cancel the meeting.
"The total was just not viable," says HRNZ's Head of Racing and Wagering Matthew Peden, "there were only enough horses for four races."
Instead HRNZ extended the nominations deadline for Friday's Alexandra Park meeting.
"Middle of winter is often a tricky time when it comes to horse numbers and we are hopeful this is an aberration."
HRNZ will now investigate ways to make the best of the situation.
"We are looking at putting some of the stakes Cambridge lost this week back into the region ... just how that looks is yet to be determined," says Peden.
