A - Z New Zealand Cup
It’s 26 days to the New Zealand Cup so today marks the start of the A-Z New Zealand Cup edition.
From now to November 10 we will feature some of the great races, horses and personalities with a new letter for each day.
A = Armalight
Armalight won the 1981 New Zealand Cup for Bob Negus, beating a classy field that included Bonnie’s Chance and Hands Down by seven lengths. And it’s not as if Armalight had a cushy run, far from it. The five-year-old mare sat outside the leader and then sprinted away. It was her 13th win in 19 starts. She went on to win 18 from 36. She died in 2003, aged 27. In 1982 Bonnie’s Chance exacted revenge by winning the Cup with Armalight second, and Quiet Win third.
