A - Z New Zealand Cup : U

There are 6 days to the New Zealand Cup

From now to November 10 we will feature some of the great races, horses and personalities with a new letter for each day.

U = Underdogs

Paying $76 for the win Borana is the best known and most recent underdog to win the New Zealand Cup in 1985.

But there have been other outsiders to upset the favourites over 3200 metres at Addington. Mobile Globe, for instance, was ranked 9th in the 13-horse field in 1952.

Mobile Globe ploughed through a testing track to beat the pacemaking Tactician by four lengths for Noel Berkett in 4:26.4.

It was Berkett’s first Cup winner and Mobile Globe would not win another race.

And Garry Dillion, at odds of 38-to-one, was victorious for Peter Wolfenden in 1965.

He was 12-10 in the betting in the 15-horse field, upsetting the likes of Lordship and Robin Dundee.
