300 wins for Team Telfer
By Mike Love
Multi location based trainers, and siblings, Steve and Amanda Telfer brought up their 300th win in partnership at Addington last night when Molly Belwin took out the Woodlands Stud - Supporting Our Future Mobile Pace.
Co-trainer Amanda Telfer was pleased to get the win and knock the milestone off.
“It took awhile to come, but we finally got there.”
The other half of the partnership, Steve Telfer, has trained 649 winners throughout various partnerships.
“It’s really good.”
Molly Belwin and driver Tim Williams restrained off the gate over the 1980m, but were caught three wide for the entire journey - albeit with cover. Williams then angled the Art Major filly four wide from the 550m to take the race by the scruff of the neck, holding off a fast late finish by race favourite Shakira.
“I was a little bit worried when she was three wide, but Tim (Williams) drove her perfectly and came out at the right time. He said ‘I only just got there’, and I said ‘well you’ve only just got to get there’.”
She will be set aside for some Nevele R Fillies heat’s later in the season.
“She’ll have a few more starts now then have a slight break before we look at some heats and hopefully qualify early for that. She’s a nice handy filly.”
The Telfer’s partnership have won close to $5 million in stakes and are in their fourth season together, currently sitting second on the premiership on 69 wins for the season behind Robert and Jenna Dunn who have 93 wins.
“The Group Ones are always special. Also horses like BD Joe winning the Flying stakes, and Aardiebytheseaside has done a brilliant job among many others. Just the calibre of horses that we are racing is a highlight in itself.”
Telfer says that they are excited about the upcoming spring racing and stepping out some of their ‘A’ team.
“We’ve got all the nice horses coming back. Spring should give us a nice end to the season.”
“It’s awesome to be doing it with my brother. Not many people get to be doing that.”
“I’ve got 55 here at the moment, and Steve is doing about 45 up there. So we are pretty busy at both camps. It’s a fairly big operation as well as buying at the sales.”
