2YO Bonus Scheme delivered on "increasing opportunities"
As the end of year approaches, HRNZ would like to formally thank Entain for its support of the 2YO Bonus Scheme.
The scheme (TYOBS) came into force on January 1 2024 as a breeding incentive and to encourage and reward 2YO racing. Put simply it rewarded first-time 2YO winners with a $12,000 payment, $8000 to the owner (s) and $4000 to the registered breeder(s).
"The bonus has helped strengthen juvenile racing by increasing early-season opportunities and giving connections an added incentive to start their horses as two-year-olds," says HRNZ's Head of Racing and Wagering, Matthew Peden.
The scheme certainly made a difference over the past two years with HRNZ records showing that 181 two-year-olds earned bonuses, totalling $1.74m.
"It is important to acknowledge the contribution the scheme has made during this period and thank all those who have supported it, whether by racing their 2YOs, preparing youngsters, or breeding the horses that filled these fields," says Peden.
The scheme was financed through the Entain Carnival Fund for two years, though in 2025 HRNZ provided funding for the second half of the season.
Having achieved its objectives the scheme is coming to a close on December 31, 2025 with Peden saying its impact will still be felt in the years to come.
"The insights and momentum gained through the bonus scheme have helped shape HRNZ’s wider approach to industry incentives, and will continue to influence future initiatives aimed at strengthening participation and supporting breeders and owners," he says.
