Sods Law goes three in a row

By Mike Love

Sods Law completed a hat trick of wins yesterday at Motukarara for father-son training combination Jim and James Geddes.

“It's brilliant!” said James Geddes.

Sods Law won on both days of the recent West Coast circuit with driver Kerryn Tomlinson on board, who also piloted the 10-year-old son of Muscle Mass to victory yesterday.

“I wouldn’t take Kerryn off after winning two, and now she’s made it three!

“I was pleased to see her take the sit. He does love to lead but only with a couple of easy quarters. He does have a real kick coming off the speed.”

Sods Law made a clean beginning from a wide draw over the 2170m stand. Leading until the 1050m, Tomlinson handed the lead up to Whispering Over who made a mid-race move. From there Tomlinson and Sods Law had to just wait for the passing lane run to offer itself, which they took with gusto to win by three quarters of a length from DD’s Super Stuart.

“When he went out onto the track at Westport I thought he looked like he was back to his best.

“I had to change his shoeing a bit after Rangiora where he hit himself up high above the boot. I went back to what he won his first five races in. Then I changed him to aluminiums which he won his next seven in. Then I had to go back again. I’m baffled. We just have to keep trying things.”

Sods Law has won 14 races in his career that is now into its seventh season, with earnings just shy of $145,000.

“He’s always had speed. Geoff Dunn also had a look at him after I told him he was sore in the shoulder. He gave him a good yank just a few days before the coast. I was sceptical but now he’s won three in a row.”

“He’s won a penalty free race each year for the last three or four seasons, and I've won on him nine times,” says Geddes.

“He’s just a dude. He’s easy to train. He eats everything. He’s a real nice horse.”

The Geddes team currently train seven horses from their Norwood base.

Other highlights of the day included a treble for trainers Matt Purvis (The Finisher, Hes Fast And Furious, Igetakickoutofyou) and also Robert and Jenna Dunn (Bounce N Beyond, Fergalicious, Jimmy Arma).
