Racing abandoned at Hawera
Today's racing at Hawera has been abandoned.
The call was made this morning after heavy rain in Taranaki for the past 24 hours or so.
"It's still pelting down now," says Harness New Zealand Racing's General Manager - Racing, Catherine McDonald, "it's just such a shame for the club but what can you do?"
After holding 11 races on the first day of the meeting on Friday the club was due to hold another 11 races today, including the Taranaki and Hawera Cups.
"Everyone was looking forward to it, especially after such a good day on Friday ... but there is no way we could have gone ahead."
At this time there's been no decision on whether the meeting will be re-scheduled or not but that seems unlikely given the already busy racing calendar this year.
"But the club will be back, if not this year then certainly next year and we will just build on what has happened over the last few days... it's certainly been good to have grass track racing back at Hawera."
