HRNZ : Warm weather reminder
In light of the warm weather we’ve been experiencing around the country, we want to remind trainers of the importance of managing horses correctly in hot conditions
· Rugging in hot weather requires care. Over-rugging can quickly become a welfare issue, as horses rely on sweating to regulate their body temperature. When a rug is used, airflow over the body is reduced, preventing sweat from evaporating and cooling the horse.
· Synthetic or heavy canvas rugs should NOT be used in hot conditions. Heat exhaustion (heat stress) is a life-threatening condition that can develop when a horse is unable to cool itself effectively.
· Know the signs of heat stress: rapid or laboured breathing, elevated temperature at rest, unusual sweating (too much or too little), lethargy, and reduced appetite.
· A white summer cool sheet can help reflect heat and UV rays, especially for horses with sensitive pink skin or dark coats.
· Hydration is critical. Horses at rest in hot weather can drink up to 60L per day, and this increases with exercise. Electrolyte replacement is essential if horses are worked in the heat. Where possible, avoid exercising horses during the hottest part of the day.
· Provide adequate shade. Horses turned out should always have access to shade; otherwise, if possible, bring them into a well-ventilated stable or covered yard.
· Protect pink skin areas, especially around the muzzle. These areas burn easily and sunburn is extremely painful. Zinc or shade flaps should be used to prevent damage.
