HRNZ statement on industry collaboration and future reform
Harness Racing New Zealand (HRNZ) welcomes comments by Racing Minister Winston Peters encouraging the industry to work together to secure the long-term future of racing in New Zealand.
HRNZ is continuing to work collaboratively with NZTR to put in place a rigorous and robust approach considering the proposals for racing sector reform that were presented to us by the TAB NZ Advisory Committee. We are committed to future delivery of the best outcomes for the racing industry and to our obligation to act in the best interests of HRNZ.
Today's release of the proposals for reform, which until this morning were confidential to the industry governing bodies, provides an opportunity for participants and stakeholders to consider a range of recommendations for the future of New Zealand racing, some of which would require legislative change.
A number of the objectives identified by the Advisory Committee are already being progressed, including work underway through Project Stamina to develop a more coordinated and strategic approach to racing and training infrastructure across New Zealand.
HRNZ continues to support the Minister's call for a collaborative approach and encourages harness racing clubs, participants, and stakeholders to review the recommendations and engage with the consultation process outlined in the Advisory Committee's letter to industry participants dated 24 June. Industry feedback will be important in informing these crucial future decisions.
While there will be differing views on aspects of the proposals, HRNZ looks forward to continuing to work constructively with NZTR, TAB NZ, government, and stakeholders as we move forward, securing long-term sustainability for our industry.
