Front line changes to be trialled at Addington

From Sunday (June 1), the front line limit in 2600 metre standing start races at Addington Raceway will be reduced from 10 to nine on a trial basis.

Harness Racing New Zealand and the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club have agreed to trial the change after an extensive consultation that included feedback from the Starters meeting held at the Raceway on April 14.

"This initiative aims to address concerns regarding crowding at the 2600m starting point, which can impact the fairness and efficiency of race starts," says HRNZ's Racing and Wagering Manager Matthew Peden.

With the front line reduced to nine, the safety limit will be reduced from 16 to 15 horses should all horses be off the same handicap. The limit will apply to both gaits in all 2600m standing starts at Addington.

"There will be a trial period through to July 31 and then we will be inviting submissions on its effectiveness with consideration to making the changes permanent," says Peden.

All other start points will remain unchanged.
