Daisy Bay impresses on debut in Young Guns Heat
By Dave Di Somma, Harness News Desk
Snapped up cheaply at last year's NZB Standardbred National Yearling Sales, Daisy Bay was one of the star performers at Alexandra Park last night.
Trained by Robert and Jenna Dunn, the Downbytheseaside two-year-old came from last at the 400 to win the Gallagher Insurance Young Guns 2YO Fillies Heat 1.
"A lovely debut", was how commentator Aaron White described the victory as she swept past favourite Lady Di to win by three quarters of a length, her last 400 in 27.9.
Daisy Bay was 4/5 in the betting in what was just a five-horse field.
She was bought by the Dunns' Diamond Racing for just $20,000 last year.
There will be more Young Gun heats on February 20 and March 6 before the $100,000 Group 1 Final, the Delightful Lady Classic on March 20.
The win capped off a great night for junior driver Jacob Dunn.
He had earlier produced a very similar drive to get Walkinonsunshine home in the Border Fencing Services Handicap Trot.
She too was last as they turned for home but swept up five wide and won with relative ease.
It was her fourth win at the Park and her seventh overall.
"She's a very nice mare," Dunn said post race, "she has a good sprint and the fact she was cuddled up early was the key."
Another feature of the night was the octogenarian marvel that is Dr Luk Chin getting his first driving-training success for 2026 when Barsukov won, paying $17, in the Frocks at the Trots - Alexandra Park February 27th Handicap Trot.
