A - Z New Zealand Cup : Y

There are 2 days to the New Zealand Cup

From now to November 10 we will feature some of the great races, horses and personalities with a new letter for each day.

Y = Young

Bob Young had 784 winners over 42 seasons but never won a New Zealand Cup or a drivers’ premiership. At the time his rivals included greats like Peter Wolfenden and Maurice Holmes.

Young had 20 New Zealand Cup drives from 1932 to 1967. He was second with Patchwork in 1961, beaten a neck by Invicta and he finished third with Master Alan in Cardigan Bay’s 1963 win.

Trotters were Young’s forte and for six seasons he was the leading driver of squaregaiters, thanks to the success of stars like Aerial Scott, Single Task Gay Belwin and Indomitable.

Young died in 1981 aged 75.
