A - Z New Zealand Cup - K
It's 16 days to the New Zealand Cup
From now to November 10 we will feature some of the great races, horses and personalities with a new letter for each day.
K = Kym’s Girl
After 18 New Zealand Cup drives without a win it was Kym’s Girl who finally got Colin De Filippi over the line in 2001.
He’d had three seconds in the big race (Our Mana twice, and Dillion Dean). Kym’s Girl was 4/3 in the betting after finishing third the year before only to come from well back to win a blanket finish over the two previous champions Homin Hosed and Yulestar. Colin trained the mare in partnership with wife Julie, who became just the second woman to train a New Zealand Cup winner, emulating Yulestar's trainer Lorraine Nolan the year before (2000).
Known for her freakish speed Kym’s Girl had 18 wins in 74 starts before her retirement in 2003.
