A week to get foals registered
The deadline to get foals registered is fast approaching.
The final day for registrations is April 1, 2022 and this year there is a key difference - all foals will be microchipped and DNA tested only, with no more freeze branding.
So far 1341 foals have been registered, with the total set to climb over the final week. .
Last season Harness Racing New Zealand introduced microchipping, bringing this country in line with other many other jurisdictions around the world. Animal welfare, including traceability, was the key reason behind the change.
A microchip the size of a grain of rice is now implanted in every foal's neck by an approved HRNZ horse identifier.
A scanner is then needed to identify the horse.
