What is HERO?

HERO – Harness Education & Rehoming Opportunities

A rehoming and re-educating programme showcasing the potential of standardbreds beyond racing.
Active in Canterbury, Southland, and the Northern region.
Launched by HRV in 2015 and adopted by HRNZ in 2021.
Focuses on promoting life after racing and encouraging welfare planning for retiring racehorses.

Horse Selection & Education

Horses selected for age, temperament, conformation, and soundness.
Placed with HERO educators for full education in groundwork and ridden disciplines.
Trained to a high standard to demonstrate versatility across various equestrian sports.

Post-Education

Horses are offered for sale, with proceeds reinvested into HERO.
All HERO horses are deregistered from racing and registered as hacks only.

Our Mission

To highlight the unharnessed potential of the standardbred as a pleasure or competition mount.
To support and celebrate the work of current rehomers across NZ’s harness racing industry.
