Tritton tunes up for Jewels

By Adam Hamilton

TRAINING horses is all about being part of the big dance for Shane Tritton.

And that’s why he and wife, Lauren, are headed back to the Harness Jewels with a couple of outsiders in Falcon Stride and Petes Big Jim at Addington on June 1.

But, after trialling the pair at Menangle yesterday (Tuesday), Tritton is sure he has two pacers who will be very competitive.

Falcon Stride, who will lock horns with Turn It Up and Ashley Locaz at the Jewels, looked sharp winning his mile trial by a big space in a cosy 1min55sec.

“He’s right where we want him and ready to go, so it’s just a matter of keeping him ticking along now until Jewels Day,” Tritton said.

“He might have a soft trial or I’ll arrange a workout with some of my other horses for him next Tuesday, but that’s just to keep him up to the mark.”

Falcon Stride and Petes Big Jim are booked on a flight to NZ Saturday week – a week ahead of the Jewels.

“I know we have to take on a couple of Purdon/Rasmussen stars with Falcon Stride, but he’s a different sort of horse for us. He’s been a slow burn, we’ve taken our time with him and he’s on the up,” Tritton said.

“I’m sure I can put him in any race and, given the right run, he’ll run really well. He’s one of my best horses.

“The other big upside with Falcon Stride is he’s owned by Emilio (Rosati) and he’s the sort of guy you want part of the Jewels. He’s likely to want to have a runner every year given the chance.”

Petes Big Jim is back for another crack at the Jewels after running second to Another Masterpiece – and beating home Jesse Duke – at Cambridge last year.

He’s been a bit disappointing with just one placing from five starts this season, but will go into the Jewels first-up.

“I liked his trial, knowing how much he needed the hitout,” Tritton said. “That will do him the world of good. Unlike Falcon Stride, he’ll have another really strong hitout next week before heading across.

“I know he’s got the job ahead, but his best is good enough to make him competitive, especially with a good draw.

“I like how he’s come back up with this time in work.”
