Ministerial Advisory Committee announced

The New Zealand racing industry can have the brighter future it deserves, but real change and brave leadership will be required from us all. The Messara Report has made important recommendations for change. The Government is now considering those recommendations of that report.

In order to progress quickly towards a brighter future for the industry, I have established a Ministerial Advisory Committee (the Committee) to set a sense of direction for the intended racing reforms. It will also report on opportunities and roadblocks to returning the racing industry to a well-managed and sustainable economic growth path. The Committee has been given a very important task to complete in a relatively short period of time.

The Committee members are: Dean McKenzie (Chair), Bill Birnie CNZM, Kristy McDonald QC, Liz Dawson and Sir Peter Vela. Collectively, they have very extensive experience of the Racing Industry and the issues that it faces.

As the Minister for Racing it is my expectation that you and your entire organisation will extend every co-operation to the work of this Committee.

This Ministerial Advisory Committee is key to ensuring that we make effective changes and implement the recommendations of the Messara Report in a well-considered and staged manner.

The Government is intent on moving the industry forward. We have the chance to turn the industry's future around.
