Race 1

12 Something’s Burning: Been a bit to like about the recent efforts. Trotting nice and square and turning in some strong runs. Mobile should assist and with a bit of luck in the running a winning turn would be no surprise.

8 Tolkien: Left flat-footed at Gore but didn’t trot that well all the same. His best is good enough to win this although the outside of the front line isn’t much help. Ability will carry a long way.

7 Riteur: Doing it nicely at the moment and drops into a race that looks well within range. With the Williamson colours on anything is possible and won’t be too far away from the action.

11 Neverneverland: Nice trotter who is aided here by the mobile arm. Looked likely on the turn the other day but blew out late. Third up and should be ready to strike.

Selections: 12-8-7-11

Race 2

13 The Doorman: Punched through nicely in testing conditions on Sunday to finish third. Going better than anything else in this race and deserves a winning turn. Should be going pretty close to success.

12 Nightmarch: Doesn’t win races often, but does go nice races all the same. Bound to be storming home late at them again today and if a run close enough to the speed appears a win would be no surprise.

3 Magnate Mara: All at sea behind the gate at Cromwell. Better than that and this field looks well within range if the manners are on board.

4 Lady’s Lass: Heading back a few starts but did run a really nice second last year to a nice type. Operates from a good draw today and might be the blowout for a place in an even looking field.

Selections: 13-12-3-4

Race 3

1 Shuzi: To be honest a win probably should have come by now but gets the perfect opportunity today to snare the elusive. Good draw, even field and a big run last time from this draw suggest a win is a mere formality.

6 Thisexcusebetterbeit: Knocking on the door and comes up against a field devoid of depth today. That should bode pretty well here and looks a strong each way option.

2 Phil’s Last Chance: Few chances left for Phil after tyre issues at Roxburgh. Debut effort was encouraging enough to suggest a top four finish is pssoble here.

9 Bronte Lindenny: Did it tough last time out at Roxburgh but draw to get the dream run here behind the likely leader. That might be enough for a positive result.

Selections: 1-6-2-9

Race 4

3 Marlee: Qualified nicely and then turned in an impressive effort for second on debut. John Hay is flying in this part of the world at the moment and should secure another victory today.

6 Aurelia Cotta: Was chasing a dream behind Bunter’s Dream last time out but very brave all the same. Deserves a winning turn and today’s a good chance although up against another smart one.

11 Ava Classy Gal: Showed a bit of grit in qualifying effort in a nice time. Follows out the speed and might be able to unleash on them late here and fill a spot.

5 Myrcella: Nice run last time out and looks to be building nicely toward a victory. This is hard, but could be the surprise packet based on the last run.

Selections: 3-6-11-5

Race 5

6 Springbank Lachie: Pretty average in first run for the New Year, but so much better than that. Mobile suits and should punch forward and give them plenty to think about.

8 Splash Cola: Couple of big ticks in the right column for today with a drop back in class and the mobile. Might light up early and look to get across them and from there could be hard to beat.

4 King Cassidy: Big run at Omakau but then galloped when warming up at Roxburgh. Best is good enough to win it in what is a cracking line up.

2 Beg Hall: Canterbury raider with a bit of ability. Gets the favourable draw over some rivals so should be on the speed and out of trouble. Can be a player late.

Selections: 6-8-4-2

Race 6

5 Duke Of Dundee: Has a class about him that not a lot of horses get. Fairly beaten on debut but by a couple of really nice ones. Trial and workout form is exceptional and should bounce back here and grab success.

1 The Mighty Cullen: Tongue was left wagging behind some pretty smart ones last time out. This is more suitable especially from the draw. Should be on the speed and right in contention.

9 Major Purchase: Little bit to like about the debut effort for fourth and this draw should pan out just perfectly. Expecting a big run up the markers late.

8 The Bird Dance: Classy qualifying effort beating Marlee who should win earlier in the day. Wide draw but there’s a good motor stashed away in there.

Selections: 5-1-9-8

Race 7

6 Arma Indie: Smashed them at Omakau and down here to qualify for Southland Oaks. Will have taken big improvement out of first up run and should be hard to beat again.

7 Mighty Flying Art: Group One fourth two starts back behind an unbeaten, potential, superstar stacks up very well here. Should be well in commission.

4 The White Rabbit: Expecting form behind Kendra to hold up quite well over the next month and the fourth last start was handy enough to suggest a bold display here would be no surprise.

13 Vin Scully: Going some big races and was very good at Omakau. Bad draw against some nice types but should be running on strongly late.

Selections: 6-7-4-13

Race 8

1 Santanna’s Rocket: Low-flying before galloping behind the tape last time out. Good draw, aggressive driver and should be on the speed and hard to catch.

8 Royal Bengal: Well-traveled but is going along nicely. Gets a good opportunity to get a win back on the board today in a small but select field.

7 Please Shuddup: Better than what most give credit for perhaps. Goes some big races at time and today’s small field offers a really good opportunity to get another win on he board.

2 Ivana Legacy: Can’t fault winning form. Doing it very nicely. Might jump straight onto the back of the #1 here and from there could be a good place chance.

Selections: 1-8-7-2

Race 9

6 Bridesdale Robyn: Big and beautiful mare who galloped behind the gate last time but was huge afterwards. This is her go. If she behaves she should be very hard to beat today despite a quality field.

3 Born To Boogie: Classy type back from a spell. Created a big impression last campaign and lead up runs have been very good. Strong hope here.

7 Just Dance: Hit the line well last time out and clearly stronger and more adaptable. Running on again today and right in the fight.

8 First Classy Lady: Good run last time out after three wins from four starts in Canterbury prior. Draw doesn’t help but shouldn’t be far away on ability.

Selections: 6-3-7-8

Race 10

1 Flash Party: Hallelujah! A barrier draw. No hope from out wide at Winton. Perfect here though and should deliver on the promise shown with a win to end the day.

12 B Mac C: Another who is plagued by bad draws with the only difference being his have continued. Running on strongly but won’t want to be too far away from the #1.

10 Triple VC: His sort of race. Hit the line strongly last time out and might just stalk the speed and then look to unleash. Can definitely fill a hole here.

14 Bigandme: Best would take him close in an even enough field. But draw makes it hard. Going to settle a long way from the good ones. Outside chance.

Selections: 1-12-10-14

BEST: 13 The Doorman (Race 2)

NEXT: 5 Duke Of Dundee (Race 6)
