Expensive yearling takes Young Guns heat
Supreme Dominator led all the way in the Young Guns heat, giving master trainer Barry Purdon a premier night win.
The juvenile, by sire sensation Bettor’s Delight, was a $140,000 yearling purchase by Purdon at the Karaka sale just over a year ago.
Naturally he was overjoyed to see his owners get a nice early return with a $25,000 race win.
“It was great to see him come out and do the job tonight for his owners.
“They put the money up so deserve the result.”
Purdon revealed after the race that Supreme Dominator had been the subject of intense buyer interest in the lead-up to the race.
“Nothing came of it though and I’d imagine it would be pretty hard to tell to sell now.”
Next week’s Group 1 $100,000 Cardigan Bay Stakes/Young Gun Final is the obvious next target but beyond that, Purdon isn’t getting carried away.
“We’ll just carry on and take it one step at a time.”
Race favourite Jesse Duke was looming in to the finish on turning in but became unbalanced and galloped in the hands of co-trainer Mark Purdon, finishing 20 lengths from the winner.
Chase Auckland beaten by stablemate in Derby prelude
It was expected that the All Stars stable of Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen would win the $20,000 Woodlands Derby Prelude for three-year-olds and that turned out to be the case.
But it wasn’t with the horse a vast majority of punters expected – Chase Auckland – but rather his stablemate, Sicario.
The son of Somebeachsomewhere was having his first run for six months after a fourth placing in August’s Australasian Breeders Crown Final in Melbourne at his most recent outing.
Purdon surged his charge to lead and ultimately found it after a strong lead time for the 2200-metre trip.
The race then became a procession with Purdon leading the small field at a dawdling tempo until about the 500-metre mark.
Sicario whipped home in 26.6 to resist the challenge of a brave Chase Auckland, who sat parked throughout in the hands of Rasmussen.
