The return of the Trotters' Inter Dom

By Adam Hamilton

THE Trotters’ Inter Dominion series is back.

Shelved since 2012, this year’s Victorian Inter Dominion series will definitely include a trotting division as well.

Harness Racing Victoria confirmed the news yesterday at the same time it announced the regional heat nights of the Inter Dominion pacings series would be held at Ballarat and Cranbourne.

So the first round of heats will be at Melton on December 1, the second at Ballarat on December 5, the third at Cranbourne on December 8 and the Grand final at Melton on December 15.

A major talking point will be whether Ballarat is asked to install a temporary sprint lane for uniformity through the series.

HRV’s general manager of racing Glen Canty confirmed there had been seven submissions from Victorian country clubs wishing to host a round of Inter Dominion heats.

The return of a trotting division is sure to be a hugely popular move.

“The trotting population now comprises almost a quarter of the total harness population in Victoria, so it was vital to recognise that appropriately. The 2018 Inter Dominion will showcase both gaits,” Canty said.
