Marcoola on way back

Former top age-group trotter, Marcoola, troubled by quarter cracks in the autumn, is progressing well in the early stages of his five-year-old preparation for West Melton trainer Ken Ford.

‘’He'll be ready for the NZ Cup meeting but we're not rushing him. Clint (Ford’s son and the horse’s co-owner) and I are giving him good long, strong work, and he's looking a million dollars,’’ Ford said.

Marcoola, by Sundon, has won 11 of 23 starts for $222,089 in stakes.

Alpa Rock eyes return

Alpha Rock is to return to the Rangiora workouts in another week for West Melton trainer Cran Dalgety after having a let-up through August.

The big Rock N Roll Heaven-Sparks A Flyin gelding improved with each of three starts at Auckland in late autumn, then regained winning form in June-July, winning three of his last six starts. He has raced only 23 times for eight wins and six placings.
