Sunny Demon off the mark

By Tayler Strong

Sunny Demon, a half-brother to smart trotter, Armbro Demon, cleared maiden ranks at Wingatui on Monday.

Sunny Demon, having his second start, is trained by Amber Hoffman for Brian Minty, of Oamaru and Ivan Hastings, of Papakaio.

They bred Sunny Demon, a four-year-old gelding by Sundon and the second foal to race out of Hold Fast, a Chiola Hanover mare who qualified as a trotter but did not race.

She foaled Armbo Demon in 2006 and failed to conceive the next four years.

She is now 16.

The same owners have a three-year-old sister to Sunny Demon.

Armbro Demon won five of her 10 starts for owner-trainer-breeder, Chris McLeod. She won over 3200m in 4.05.4 at the 2011 NZ Cup meeting.

Armbro Demon (by Armbro Invasion) was recently retired to stud.

Michael and Christine Farley, of Winton had their first win as owners with the first horse they have raced when Percius was successful on Monday.

They bought Percius privately three weeks ago in partnership with Keith and Tracey Norman.

The four-year-old was having his second start in their ownership.

Percius is trained on the beach at Takahopa by Brian Norman.

The Farleys and Normans are travelling friends.

Winton owners Pam Neame, Jo-Anne McCallum and Barbara Wilson had their first win yesterday when Balagio got up in the last few strides.

They race Balagio with Leda Beck, whose husband, Allan Beck is the trainer.

Balagio, a four-year-old by Live Or Die the first foal of Sarah Jane, a lightly raced sister to good winner Patch Adams.
