Cup Night excitement building
- 05 March 2015
Following last Friday’s successful Oaks Night, excitement at Alexandra Park is once again building ahead of tonight’s action-packed evening with the prestigious Auckland Trotting Cup up for grabs.
Alexandra Park Cup Week this year celebrates 125 years of harness racing at Auckland’s home of trotting, with plenty of entertainment and hospitality also on offer.
Auckland Cup Night includes four must see fashion competitions with entrants up for prizes in the Best Dressed categories as well as Best Body Art. On the main stage there will be live performances by The Hipstamatics, with the after party continuing late in the Alex Bar and Eatery.
“The combination of New Zealand’s best horses, superb racing, entertainment, fashion and hospitality will make for a very special evening. What’s more entry and entertainment are free for the public to enjoy,” says Alexandra Park Sales & Marketing Manager Kimberley Algie.
Cup Night is Auckland harness racing’s biggest night of the season. The $250,000 Auckland Trotting Cup is the race of champions. In the past it has been won by true sporting greats like Cardigan Bay, Young Quinn, Christian Cullen, Elsu and Themightyquinn.
This year the Auckland Trotting Cup race includes mare Adore Me - the fastest horse in the Southern Hemisphere who will be competing from barrier 13 against the boys in the prestige race of the night.
The night will also celebrate New Zealand’s newest world champion, driver Dexter Dunn. Dexter has just returned from Sydney where he completely dominated the World Driving Championships, beating nine of the best horsemen from around the world in win by the largest margin in the history of the series. Just 25 years old, Dexter Dunn will chase the Auckland Cup title with Christen Me to add to his remarkable success and accomplishments.
Racing media personality Michael Guerin says having the Woodlands Stud Derby on the same night will make for a night of champions. He says tonight’s Cup Night will also see the best freshman pacing talent in the Young Guns Finals.
“The great thing about Alexandra Park is it has something for everybody from the glitz of fine dining through to the more casual racing experience. The intimate nature of the venue, adds to this. Tonight also provides a great night time racing experience for those whose commitments make racing during the day less attractive,” says Michael Guerin.
