No stopping Ideal Success

The Arna Donnelly trained Ideal Success nailed his fourth Country Cups final this season when winning the $10,000 Hewes Metals Franklin Country Cup at Alexandra Park on Tuesday.

The consistent 4-year-old American Ideal gelding won the 3200m standing start event in 4:06.75 with a 2:04.9 mile rate.

His previous winning mile rates have been 2:08.8 (Stratford Cup), 2:09.9 (Morrinsville), and 2:06.9 (Thames).

“He just seems to be getting better with each race. Arna has done an absolutely brilliant job with him considering he was a rough gaited pacer early on.

“We all seem to think he will be an even better 5-year-old next season, but no matter happens I can’t speak highly enough of how much Arna has turned this horse around in such a short time,” said co-owner Peter Argus.

Adaptable on both grass and the grit it was Ideal Success’s eighth win in 23 starts – three of which have come at Alexandra Park, and five of them this season. His stake earnings currently sit at $44,312.

Donnelly said she was delighted with gelding’s first run over the extreme distance.

“He just keeps giving. He was amazing today, sitting parked and then just edging out Sweet Art. I’m not sure where we will go from here but perhaps Hawera and of course the Country Cups Final,” Donnelly said.

After sitting parked for the last lap Ideal Success kicked on to win by half a neck. Brydon Delight was 6-1/2 lengths back in third.

Ideal success paced his final 800m in 56.3 and last 400m in 27.4. He was the $4.30 second favourite.

Argus, who co-owns Ideal Success with Donnelly’s father Brent, said Australia was not an option but Christchurch could be next season.

“We will just see how he develops, but like I said before we all think his best season could come next year,” said Waiuku-based Argus

He was bred by Woodlands Stud.
