Harnessing Your Horse Power

Harness Racing plays an important role in the lives of many thousands of New Zealanders through employment, entertainment, or the hundreds of businesses that service the industry such as feed merchants, farriers, horse transport companies. However because of the wagering aspect of racing we believe the industry has been ignored in school curriculums.

With the new health and physical education curriculum being introduced into schools Harness Racing New Zealand in conjunction with the Auckland Trotting Club have developed a resource that can be easily used to support the planning and teaching in this area.

In establishing links between education and our industry HRNZ have been extremely conscious of providing a resource that focuses on the people and the horse in Harness Racing, We have created a programme that can be easily integrated with current school programmes. It offers support through flexible curriculum, stimulating activites with valuable cost efficient resourcing in the form of horses, ponies, a field trip, the resource kit for use in the classroom and of course education team members visit schools to introduce the programme and are available for any further visits.

Harnessing Your Horse Power has been designed as an integrated unit of studies for year five and six New Zealand Primary School students.  It presents an exciting oportunity for children to learn about an industry and a sport in which young, old, male or female participants can participate and compete on equal terms.
