The Trials Report – Six of the Best

These horses have trialled pleasingly in recent weeks and this week (4/12/25) they head back to the racetrack.

Princess Of Savoy (3f Captain Crunch – Tosti Girl) Tr. B & G Hughes

Well-bred filly (1/2 sister to NZ Cup winner Thefixer) who went super in a Pukekohe trial (6/11/25) behind the well performed Cold Chisel MR:2:00.8, 800m in 55.3. In her first race start since June (21/11/25) she received little luck in the running after getting caught wide and was forced to race parked most of the way, still fought bravely for fourth, 3L behind winner Always B Misty on a 1:56MR. Beaten favourite on that occasion. Back at the Park this Friday night (Race 4) and has scored the coveted pole in a graduation final and likely to be in or near the lead throughout. The veteran of just seven starts so far but dam won seven of 19 and $197k. Punters should stick with her although there are plenty of form runners to make it very competitive.

Magic Dash (6g Kadabra – Habibti Sadie) Tr. Wallis/Hackett

Seven-race winner (+ $120k) who has only had the two starts in 2025, back in April, for two commendable fifths before health issues halted that campaign. Primed by two workouts in November, the latest behind a galloping pacemaker at the Park where it was untouched to record a 2:10.3MR, 800m in 58.7, 400m in 28.8. Resumes this Friday at Auckland (Race 3) in a 5 horse field. Off 20m with two rivals ahead and two rivals handicapped further back. Has done well in a fresh state before and while these small fields can be very tactical, he is expected to give a good sight.

Bazooka (4g Bettor’s Delight – Asuka) Tr. S Reid

‘Headache’ horse for the Reidman after looking a rising star earlier in the year only to have a few issues and to have his form fall away. Back at the trials 26/11/25 at Rangiora after a lacklustre run on Cup day behind Its Tough and in the four-horse trial he sat last until the 600m, got to third then reeled in good mare Francent (trailed) in the last 50m after giving her a handy head start turning in. MR:1:58.1, 800m in 57.8, 400m in 28.6. Back at the races this Friday at Addington (Race 9) where he has drawn the outside of the gate due to the preferential draw. Good enough to overcome that if the best version of Bazooka turned up.

Flashpoint (3g Captain Crunch – Joanne’s A Delight) Tr. B Gray

Spelled after racing the likes of Marketplace and other good 3YOs earlier in the year. Won a four-horse workout at Invercargill (30/10/25) and followed that up with a solid second to The Orange Roughy (7/11/25) after trailing that runner in a three-horse heat at Winton. MR:2:05.9, 800m in 58.9, 400m in 27.6. Well supported in two races back in a fresh campaign in November without getting a lot of luck in the running and still not being too far away from the respective winner. Goes to Wingatui on Sunday on the grass in Race 6. Has a second line draw that could work out nicely and has a top southern reinsman on. Has a 2 win/3 placings/10 start record and looks a solid chance to record win number three.

Carlin (3g Art Major – Oranje) Tr. B Negus

Has been very solid this campaign since trialling on the grass back in September often without a lot of racing luck. Last week at Methven was a good example where he was badly held up in the home straight then powered home to make up many lengths behind Hi Hopes, eventually finishing fifth. Back at Geraldine this Saturday (Race 9) where he has another chance to add to his three win tally from a good draw. His grass stats are good and even better if it were to become wet. Dam is a full sister to champion filly The Orange Agent (23 wins from 33 starts).

Moonlight CC (3f Captain Crunch – Blood Moon) Tr. A Stuart

Had a couple of quiet trials at Rangiora through October before resuming at Kaikoura where she battled solidly into fourth. Backed that up at Addington (7/11/25) where she showed gate speed to lead and was caught late by Crackle N Crunch in a 1:59.5MR. The veteran of only three race day starts but goes to Geraldine this Saturday (Race 3) where she has scored a nice draw in a small field of seven behind the mobile. Only the second foal from her dam with older half brother Moonlite Blood having won four races to date. The owner/trainer combination have had much success with this family and this filly looks more than capable of adding to those numbers.
