The Trials Report - Six of the Best

These horses have trialled pleasingly in recent weeks and this week (2/10/25), they head back to the racetrack.

Macandrew Aviator (8g Panspacificflight – Arts Mistress) Tr. J Douglas

Last start third behind Akuta in Hannon Memorial (14/9/25) and only 1.5L the from winner in a 1:58.4MR. That was his third run back in a new campaign after going to the spelling paddock in late April. Returned to the Winton workouts (26/9/25) and returned a monster effort to rush home behind smart filly Miki’s Deal after being some 15L off the pace with 500m to run. MR:2:04.1, 800m in 58.5. Those sectionals were off the front so his would have been sensational especially over the final 400m. Goes to Wyndham this Thursday (Race 3) where he starts against five rivals over the mile. As the winner of nine races, the preferential draw has him starting on the outside but that might not be enough to stop him.

By Chance (3g Lord Forbes – Livy Franco) Tr. G Forbes

One official trial at Wyndham (27/9/25) where he sat midfield of seven and finished on under his own steam to be a close up fourth behind Step It Up A Notch. MR:2:01.9, 800m in 58.9, 400m in 27.7 and looked to have more to offer.
Resumes on Thursday on the same track in Race 7 after not racing since last March. Showed plenty of promise as a 2YO including a win (from 7 starts). Drawn the inside of the second line and should do no work sitting three deep? Likely to be a stronger version as a 3YO and this field arguably not as strong as the trial field he met last week.

Nothing But You (3f Captaintreacherous – Bubbled Up) Tr. S Reid

Well related filly from a hot stable going to Methven this Sunday in Race 3 where she has drawn the inside of the second line behind the mobile. Two very good trials at Rangiora in recent weeks behind the very smart Ripples. In the last trial (25/9/25), she trailed that winner and fought on very strongly to place second.  MR:1;58.7, 800m in 56.7, 400m in 28.5. The veteran of only six starts but her only win was on the grass at Motukarara. Should get an economic trip from her draw and looks to be a stronger horse this time in. Up against some seasoned rivals but looks to have plenty of upside for this resumption

Hes Not That Into U (2g Bettor’s Delight – Settle Petal) Tr. T Herlihy

Three public outings for 3 wins, the latest at Alex Park (26/9/25) where he trailed stablemate and race rival Gloria Steinem, came alongside 400m out and got the better of that runner final 100m (2 horse heat). MR:2:05.9, 800m in 57.6, 400m in 29.1. Debuts at Auckland this Friday in Race 4 for his large group of owners and faces just 5 rivals where he has drawn 1 from the outside over 2200m. Two others also on debut so this looks like an ideal time/place to launch his career. Expecting punters be ‘right into him’ on this occasion.

Ripples (2f Bettor’s Delight – Naiya Franco) Tr. M Jones

Very smart filly who has been on fire at the Rangiora trials during September. In her latest trial (25/9/25), she showed gate speed to lead and gave nothing else a chance to get close. MR:1:58.7, 800m in 56.7, 400m in 28.5. Only beaten once in four starts earlier in the season and resumes this Friday night at Addington (Race 7) in a hot 2YO Fillies Sires' Stakes heat where she has drawn two on the second line. Looks ready to rumble judging by her trials form and while she is up against some very promising fillies, this might be the best time to get a healthy return.

Beside Me (3f Downbytheseaside – Dream About Me) Tr. C & C Dalgety

Quality filly resuming this Friday night at Addington in Race 9 in a heat of the NR series. Went to the Rangiora trials (25/9/25) and led Five Crowns and Bazooka then kept going strongly to stay in front. MR:1:58.1, 800m in 55.7, 400m in 27.0. Race rival Celestial Sea fourth in that trial. Drawn wide on Friday night, her first race since May and no doubt will improve further with the run under her belt but her class cannot be underestimated. Has already won four of 9 and close to $100k in stakes. Expecting her to roll forward early with her key rivals drawn the second line.
